What Does It Take To Pull Off The Gigantic Christmas With The Tabernacle Choir?

Performances by more than 40 guest artists and storytellers who have appeared at this traditional Christmas concert over the past 20 years will be heard in a retrospective program. These performers and storytellers include Broadway stars Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Angela Lansbury, Kelly O’Hara, Santino Fontana and Laura Osnes; R&B singer Gladys Knight; the late jazz singer Natalie Cole; pop singer David Archuleta; newsmen Walter Cronkite and Tom Brokaw; historian David McCullough; Muppets from “Sesame Street”; actors Jane Seymour, Hugh Bonneville, Richard Thomas, the late Ed Herrmann, John Rhys-Davies, Roma Downey, the late Peter Graves, Claire Bloom, Michael Yorke and Martin Jarvis; and in opera roles by Renee Fleming, Deborah Voigt, Frederica von Stade, Bryn Terfel, Nathan Gunn, Alfie Boe, Sissel and Rolando Villazon. Together, the special guests have won 34 Grammy Awards and 19 Tony Awards

This two-hour retrospective special, “20 Years of Christmas with the Tabernacle Choir,” replaces the traditional television special that would have resulted from the live Christmas concert in 2020; this had to be canceled due to covid restrictions. In new segments taped in November 2020 that followed Covid protocols, Mitchell joined a number of socially distanced orchestra members and choral music director Mac Wilberg at the empty 21,000-seat Temple Square Convention Center in Sault Ste. -Lake City joined the classic Christmas record. The choir also joined Mitchell and the orchestra for their first virtual performance.

At a special event in New York on December 8, the Tabernacle Choir presented Mitchell with a $100,000 check for The Actors Fund, which he chairs to support the performing arts community.

According to Mitchell, before the Covid pandemic, the fund would normally distribute $2 million to 6,500 people; since the start of the pandemic, it has provided more than $21 million to nearly 16,000 people in need.
